On July 19, staff at an exchange office inside a shopping center in Phuket discovered the theft of over 600,000 baht. The owner of the currency exchange business reported the theft after an employee noticed the incident. The suspect may have posed as a foreigner and fled the scene. Local media reports indicate that such cases of theft from exchange offices in Phuket are not uncommon. Last year, the police arrested a Myanmar worker for violating his labor contract terms, as well as detained a French fugitive and a Thai ice seller who attacked a Ukrainian tourist. During the investigation, the theft was linked to possible fraud. The suspect may have used their appearance to deceive exchange office staff and fled the scene. The Vichit police have already begun investigating this case. Local Thai media also reported other thefts in Phuket, such as the arrest of a Turkish man for illegal possession of drugs and the detention of four foreigners with marijuana at Phuket International Airport. In light of these incidents, expats are advised to be cautious when exchanging currency and storing large sums of money. Exchange office staff should also remain vigilant to avoid similar incidents.
