Frenchman Arrested for Drunk Driving on Rear Wheel A French citizen was arrested in Patong after performing a "wheelie" on a public road on a high-powered motorcycle. The man was detained at approximately 10:15 AM on May 16, and a test revealed that he was already drunk at that early hour. The Patong police report does not provide the Frenchman's name or specify his visa status. The face in the photos is hidden by a smiling emoticon. The location of the events is indicated as "the side of the road at the intersection near Patong-Hill, Siriraj Rd.". Apparently, a screenshot from a street surveillance camera was taken at this location. The Frenchman was charged with five counts: Riding a motorcycle without a license; Riding a motorcycle without a helmet; Dangerous driving creating a potential threat to life and property; Dangerous driving with disregard for the safety of other road users; Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police mentioned charges of driving without a license, but not the transfer of control of a vehicle to a person without a license. At the same time, in the case of rental motorcycles, law enforcement officers are increasingly turning to this article as well, fining motorcycle rentals along with violators (see, for example, here and here). Chalong police also reported a case where similar behavior by motorcycle renters led to a full-fledged inspection of a foreign motorcycle rental company that rented out high-powered bikes to tourists of this type. An inspection revealed that the Thai legal entity of the business was fictitious. The owners – a male and female citizen of Belarus – were charged under the relevant articles of the Foreign Business Act (details here). Photo: Patong Police
